Bully Prevention Week
The week of November 14 - 18 was Bully Prevention Week at Katimavik Elementary School and across the city of Ottawa. Students at KES were involved in several activities to raise their awareness about what bullying is and is not. All week long, Grade 7 Ambassadors read announcements in English and French on the morning announcements to share statistics about bullying with all students in the school.

We have begun taking a monthly outdoor walk with all students in the school (September was Terry Fox, October was Hallowe'en) and on November 15 the walk included a flash mob prepared by several teachers to show the power of people working in the same direction; together we can work to prevent bullying by becoming involved and not being a bystander. |

Students wore pink on November 16 and signed a large pink figure to pledge to their part to prevent bullying before it starts. They received a bright pink pencil from our community partner the Western Ottawa Community Resource Centre as a reminder of their pledge. Here, Ashley Burke of CBC Radio One interviews students as they sign the pledge. |

On November 17, classes paired up with their learning buddies to learn more about solutions to bullying and to continue to build the relationships within the school community. |
Bullying is defined as behaviour in which there is a real (or perceived) imbalance of power which targets an individual, is repeated over time and intends to do harm. Bullying can be physical, verbal, social, financial or electronic (cyber bullying). It is important for students to stand up and say that they don't accept being treated that way by others and that they report to an adult in a timely way when incidents occur. Continued reporting allows the adults to determine if the steps they have taken to get the bullying to stop have worked or if they need to change the approach. Reporting is key! Bystanders can be very helpful in this regard.
